July 24, 2012—The Cypress Woods High School FFA chapter was awarded with the Lone Star FFA Degree, the highest degree bestowed by the Texas FFA, at the 84th annual Texas FFA Convention, held July 9-13 in Corpus Christi.
The Lone Star FFA Degree recognizes FFA members who have received the chapter degree, been active FFA members for at least two years, completed at least four semesters of agricultural science at or above the ninth-grade level, maintained a supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program, demonstrated their leadership skills and shown a commitment to the FFA through involvement at the chapter level and above. These students were among 1,553 members throughout the state receiving this esteemed degree.
The 13 members of the Cypress Woods FFA to receive the degree are:
-
Kyle Atkins, Jon Carlisle, Lauren Clark, Shelby Drab, Dezi Funnell, Mary Hyde, Clint Jozwiak, Stephanie Kubecka, Lauren Lowry, Aaron Mushinski, Kelsey Supak, Alex Whitnah and Tyler Wooten.
“Many think the CFISD ag-science program is all about the huge livestock show and sale we hold each year. While that event is a very visible part of it, the accomplishments of these students demonstrate that it is much more than raising and showing animals,” said Denise Kubecka, career and technical education coordinator. “We offer multiple options for students to fulfill the FFA mission ‘by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success.’ As both a coordinator for the program and a parent of children in the program, I have witnessed the positive impact this program has on the lives of students.”

The Cypress Woods FFA also received a bronze-level chapter for the esteemed Golden Horizon award in the multiple-teacher division. The Golden Horizon state rating award selection is based on exceptional chapter involvement and activities within the school and community, recognizing well-rounded chapter involvement that promotes maximum participation in order to deliver all facets of the agricultural education program.
Additionally, Kelsey Supak participated in the Texas FFA Rodeo, held in conjunction with the Texas FFA Convention, at the San Patricio County Fairgrounds in Sinton. Recording times of 16.596, 16.526 and 16.191 in the barrel racing event, Kelsey qualified for the Texas FFA Rodeo Finals—where she placed fourth in the short-go and fifth place in the overall average. Supak was among 151 participants in the Texas FFA Rodeo.
