
February 14, 2008 —Hamilton Middle School seventh-grade student Kunal Shah won first place by correctly spelling the champion word epiphyte in the seventh round of the annual district-wide Middle School Spelling Bee, held at the Instructional Support Center on Wednesday. Shah also correctly spelled affluent in the final round.
Spillane Middle School seventh-grade student Tyler Carter was the district’s runner-up. Both Shah and Carter will compete in the Houston Chronicle Regional Spelling Bee scheduled for March 26.
“ The middle school students who battled it out at the Bee demonstrated their ability to be self-directed learners and quality producers,” said Susan Tyler, coordinator of middle school language arts. “Each student who participated can be proud of this achievement. The parents, families and teachers who contributed to each student’s success should also be commended.”
Each middle school had a Spelling Bee champion and runner-up represented at the district competition. These students are:
